QUANTITY OF BRICKS CALCULATION

The Quantity of bricks calculation is very important because most of buildings are to be constructed with 75% of brickwork especially (In Asian countries). So it is very important for us to know how many bricks are required in a 1-meter cube volume.

After knowing the 1-meter cube volume we can calculate the remaining quantity very easily by just multiplying the 1-meter cube result by the desired volume.

The calculation is quite simple means how many numbers of bricks you will require to build your wall and others, but there are a few important considerations you must always consider when you are calculating the quantity.

  1.  The width of the wall which going to be built.
  2.  The number of openings in the wall (doors, Windows, etc.)
  3.  Size or which Type of the brick going to use.

Let’s take this example to understand it well.

EXAMPLE:

Suppose we have to construct the wall having a volume of the 1-meter cube, the size of brick is going to use is 190 mm ×90 mm ×90 mm and mortar is 8 mm thick with the ratio of 1: 4.  So

1.) Calculate the number of bricks.

2.) The quantity of cement?

3.) The quantity of sand?

Brick Wall

GIVEN DATA:

Volume (L x W x H) = 1 meter cube.

Mortar thickness = 8 mm.

Mortar Ratio = 1:4

Size of brick = 190 mm ×90 mm ×90 mm. or (0.19 m x 0.09 m x 0.09 m).

Size of brick with mortar = 198 mm × 98 mm× 98 mm. or (0.198 m x 0.098 m x 0.098 m).

Quantity of bricks Formula

SOLUTION:

This calculation can take place in 2 steps.

1. Step: (Bricks Calculation)

  1. Volume of 1 brick = (0.19 m x 0.09 m x 0.09 m) = 0.001539 meter cube.
  2. Volume of 1 brick with mortar = (0.198 m x 0.098 m x 0.098 m) = 0.0019 meter cube.
  3. No of bricks in 1 cum = volume/volume of bricks with mortar = 1/0.0019 = 526 Bricks.

2. Step: (Mortar Calculation)

  1. The volume is covered by 526 bricks in 1 Cum Volume = (Bricks number x Volume of 1 brick).
  2. 500 Bricks Volume  = 526 x 0.001539 = 0.81 meter cube.
  3. Volume  = (Total volume – volume of bricks).
  4. Mortar volume = 1 – 0.81 = 0.19 meter cube. (wet volume).
  5. Dry Volume = 0.19 x 1.33 = 0.2527 meter cube (dry Volume).   Where (1.33 is a constant)

CEMENT:

Cement: = (dry volume x Ratio x Density of cement in 1 cum)/Sum of Ratio.

= (0.2527 x 1 x 1440)/5

= 72.77  kg /50   <1 bag = 50 kg>

= 1.5 bags

SAND:

Sand: = (dry volume x Ratio x 35.3147)/Sum of Ratio. (1 Cum = 35.3147 cubic feet.)

= (0.2527 x 4 x 35.3147)/5

= 7.1 cubic feet

Conclusion:

BRICKS = 526

CEMENT = 1.5 bags.

SAND = 7.1 cubic feet.

Note: These ratios may change by changing the dimension of the mortar thickness or size of the bricks as well as the mortar ratios 1: 4, 1: 6 etc.

This quantity of bricks calculation is based on experience and some practical Knowledge. The exact quantity may be less or more.
